Effective irrigation management at field level requires farmers and irrigators to undestand a set of complex relationships: between the flow rate being delivered onto the field, the acreage being irrigated, the irrigation duration (set time), and the total amount of irrigation water needed versus that applied. All these parameters should be combined so that each irrigation can replenish the water used by the crop since the previous irrigation or rain event, while avoiding water deficit to plants and/or excessive water applications relative to the total water-holding capacity of the soil.
