Globally, slugs have long been regarded as severe pests of agricultural and horticultural production, with a vast array of crops susceptible to attack. Slugs have also been implicated in the transmission of many plant pathogens; and as vectors for parasitic nematodes in humans. They have also been shown to transmit bacteria which cause food poisoning and may have been partially responsible for past recalls of contaminated salad crops grown on the west coast.
